I thought it would be fun to do a little occasional series of things that really turn my thoughts to the Lord. It could be a song, or an author, or a Bible passage; things that just really put me in a worshipful attitude.
Tonight, in the midst of a very negative series, I thought it would be a good time to start – to bring some light into the gloom.
My first entry is the song that got me thinking about this whole idea: “In the Girl There’s a Room” by Sara Groves. Now, if you don’t know her, Sara Groves is an amazingly gifted and thought-provoking songwriter. But she is also a woman with a great heart for the Lord Jesus, and this song’s lyrics are just an awesome testimony to that heart, as well as to her giftedness.
In the girl, there’s a room;
In the room, there’s a table;
On the table, there’s a candle
And it won’t burn out…
In the boy, is a dream;
In the dream, he is standing,
And he stands without falling,
And he won’t back down…
In the woman, is a picture;
In the picture, is a girl;
In the girl there’s a room…
Now, according to the actual lyrics, “this is a song about the defiance of a prayer”. It’s a rocker (in my opinion), and the imagery of prayer as a candle that “won’t burn down” just reminds me that we don’t have to be consciously praying, or even praying our own words for the Father to hear us. The candle image reminds me of the Holy Spirit’s endless groaning on our behalf (Romans 8:26).
And that image of prayer as defiance! Refusing, in the Name of Christ and His righteousness, to let the darkness take you or bring you crashing down…. whoa.
Finally, the final image, of the girl again, this time hiden away in the woman… a reminder of the childlike faith with which Christ gifts us. It’s in there, in that room, with that ever-burning candle.

I like that. Never heard of Sara Groves before — but no surprise there, as I’m so hopelessly out of date. But I shall keep an eye out for here music next time I’m in a Christian book shop.
Particularly like the verse:
in the boy there’s a voice
in the voice there’s a calling
in the call there’s a promise
and it won’t quiet down
I’ve experienced many a sleepless night when the ‘calling voice’ just wouldn’t leave me alone — especially when I was considering my future ministry.

I have a burger belly, and it’s more of an outside thing

Paul, did you get to click over and hear the clip she has on her website (the link’s in the post). She has magnificent stylistic range! It’s too short a clip, though!
My favorite line, one I didn’t even include in the post is “so much can go wrong, and still there are songs.” The persistence of God’s joy in the world, it’s astounding.

Yes, Tom, I did have a listen. I’m tempted to order one of her CD’s. But I’ve been spending a bit too much recently, so it will need to wait a while.
